Priya Narthakii

Acclaimed by critics and connoisseurs as a “child prodigy,” Priya Narthakii started her Indian classical dancing career by making her first stage appearance at the tender age of two and a half. Under the meticulous and intense guidance of her mother and mentor – dance maestro¬†Uma Suresh, Founder and Creative Director of Natya Priya Dance Academy and a disciple of grand masters ‘Padmasri’ Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai,

‘Padmabhushan’ Kamala, and Dr. Vempatti Chinna Sathyam-Kuchipudi, Priya has given over three hundred fifty performances both as a soloist and as a principle dancer in the Natya Priya Dance Academy ensemble and has appeared in prestigious venues around the world receiving distinguished honors from eminent masters of dance and music, including the title of “Nritya Deepika” (Dancing Flame) for her notable lyrical grace and¬†finesse of movements. She has also worked with numerous museums, the San Diego Department of Education as part of their Artists-In-School Program and provided lecture demonstrations and master classes at universities throughout the United States.

Priya has been endowed with the divine gift of talent and focused dedication and is a is a remarkable artiste who presents classically-based repertoires through avant-garde eyes with choreography inspired by her spiritually driven intellectualism, her intrinsic passion for the art, and by the much acclaimed choreographic style of her Guru Uma Suresh. Through her command of classicism Priya presents the finer nuances of the art with ease, utilizing both powerful physicality and intense emotions, drawing the viewer into the experiences she creates on stage. She shares her time touring, expanding her choreographic works in collaboration with other creative artists. As the Creative Director of Muvements, Priya is dedicated to the company’s mission of using ancient indian methods, in fresh, simple and applicable ways to meet modern needs and achieve an energized life.
